ATLANTA – Governor Brian P. Kemp and Georgia Department Commissioner for Early Childhood Education (DECAL) Amy M. Jacobs announced plans on Wednesday to add $ 1,000 to eligible Pre-K teachers, assistant teachers, and childcare teachers in Georgia to grant. The payments are funded from federal CCDBG (Child Care and Development Block Grant) funds provided for in the latest Consolidated Funds Act of 2021. These payments are for programs that remained open throughout the pandemic.

“The childcare teachers and Pre-K program in Georgia have been at the forefront of the impact COVID-19 has on our families and communities from the start, caring for the children of first responders and key workers,” Kemp said. “Throughout the pandemic, we have continued to focus on ensuring that parents can return to work safely knowing that their children are well looked after. I thank Commissioner Jacobs and her team for working tirelessly to manage these funds and support children, parents and educators across Georgia. “

“We cannot say enough about the excellent work and flexibility of the Georgian childcare workers and the Georgian Pre-K program, both during a pandemic and every day,” said Jacobs. “We have been working on a comprehensive plan for using the new Block Grant funds for childcare and development envisaged in the recent Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2021 to support the workforce, childcare workers and families. These additional payments are a small but tangible way to express our gratitude to our teachers for early care and education. You can’t price the confidence and security of knowing that your children are well looked after and educated even in the toughest of times, but we have that trust here in Georgia. “

Over the next few weeks, DECAL will publish the admission criteria under federal law and begin paying the Georgian pre-K and childcare workers.

To date, DECAL has awarded over $ 92 million in childcare and development block grants for licensed childcare programs in Georgia affected by COVID-19. In the first round of Short Term Assistance Benefit for Licensed Entities (STABLE) payments, DECAL provided more than $ 38.8 million in financial assistance to 3,789 licensed childcare workers. In a second round, $ 54 million was recently awarded to 3,677 providers. The money paid out so far is roughly two-thirds of the $ 144 million Georgia received this year under the CCDBG block grant for childcare and development provided for in the Coronavirus Aid Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act.
