After a car accident and brief car chase, Omaha deputy police chief Ken Kanger said a person was killed in a shooting at 8:30 p.m. Thursday. The shooting took place in the 36th and Laurel area.

The incident began around 8:10 p.m. Thursday when police officers noticed a blue Chevrolet Camaro with expired license plates heading north and tried to stop it. Officials reported that the vehicle ran over a stop sign on 34th Street and Laurel Avenue.

It then collided with a truck driving east at this intersection.

Kanger said a woman and several young children were in the car. One child was slightly injured but not taken to hospital.

According to the officials, the driver got out of the vehicle, was armed with a pistol and ran into the neighborhood.

Officials report that officers began a search for the suspect and found him in a back yard near 36th Street and Laurel Avenue.

“Officials told the radio that he had a black man who was armed and ordered people to put their guns down and then indicated that shots were being fired over the radio,” Kanger said.

Kanger found that no officers were firing their guns and investigators found a handgun at the scene.

“What usually happens in an incident like this is that we also investigate the officer and do a lap count and examine his weapon along with the interview,” said Kanger.

The police did not reveal the man’s name. A friend said he wasn’t buying the police version of what happened. Bear Alexander said his friend had shown no signs of depression.

“He always had a positive attitude. He never showed a depressed bone in his body,” said Alexander.

He also said his friend has been working on a new clothing store for the past 18 months and it’s bearing fruit this week.

“I can’t even express the excitement he had for all of this and he was so full of it,” said Alexander. “Why it was so widespread, the goods he ordered and then they arrived yesterday.”

KETV Newswatch 7 learned that OPD had shown family and community leaders at least some of the body cam footage. Alexander said that this step is neglected.

“Historically, our repressive government will always make small concessions to quench the anger of the masses. This is the absolute small concession. Let the public open it. Why does the public not see it,” Alexander said.

Kanger said the Nebraska State Patrol and likely another law enforcement agency will be investigating this death. Kanger said the officers wore body cameras. This video is being reviewed.

There were a woman and several young children in the car. Kanger said a child sustained minor injuries but was not taken to hospital. Alexander said two of the children belonged to his friend.
