Metropolis Of Minneapolis: One In Custody After Hit And Run Collision That Kills Little one

June 15, 2021

At 8:37 pm, Minneapolis Police and Fire Departments responded to a report of a hit and run personal injury crash on the 5100 block of Fremont Avenue North where a child was struck in the street.  Additional information was that the suspect vehicle had fled the scene.

Officers arrived and located a juvenile male victim laying in the roadway in very critical condition. Officers and fire personnel began providing live saving aid until relieved by paramedics. Other officers went down the road and located the driver of the suspect vehicle and took him into custody.

The victim, who was unidentified at the time, was transported to North Memorial Medical Center in very critical condition.

Preliminary investigation indicates that suspect vehicle was travelling northbound on Fremont Avenue North and the victim was westbound on 51st Avenue North, either walking or skateboarding, when they collided in the intersection. The suspect vehicle continued northbound and struck several parked cars. The suspect vehicle continued north and attempted to turn onto 52nd Avenue North and left the roadway stopping in a yard. This is where the suspect was later taken into custody. It appears that drugs or alcohol may be a contributing factor in this crash.

The juvenile victim was identified at the hospital and he was found to be 16 years old. The hospital called the police department and advised that the child died.

Minneapolis Police Department’s Crime Lab and Traffic Investigations Unit responded to the scene to investigate this incident. They were assisted by the Minnesota State Patrol.

The Medical Examiner’s Office will release the identity of the victim along the nature and cause of death.

The Go Number for this case is 21-130914.
