‘Croods 2’ hits # 1 again 13 weeks after its release and hits $ 50 million at the US box office

Thirteen weeks after its original release, Universal / DreamWorks’ “The Croods: A New Age” is again # 1 at the pandemic box office. With $ 1.7 million in revenue this weekend from 1,913 screens, gross domestic revenue rose to over $ 50 million. Combined with an international grand total of $ 103.1 million, the total worldwide total for the film now stands at $ 154 million, excluding sales to premium video-on-demand viewers after the film was released on digital platforms in December thanks to Universal’s cinema friend with AMC and Cinemark. Universal did not release PVOD sales for the film, but says that “Croods 2” has become the studio’s second highest-ranking digital new release title after “Trolls World Tour,” which opened at the start of the PVOD pandemic. In the meantime, Searchlight Pictures released the critically acclaimed Oscar front-runner “Nomadland” in both theaters and streaming on Hulu. Searchlight is not reporting box office reports for the Chloe Zhao film, but industry estimates suggest that after two weeks of running on IMAX and in premium formats, the film makes $ 500,000 from 1,200 screens. This would put the film in seventh place in the weekend charts alongside Focus Features’ “Land”. Also read: Can late-arriving Oscar contenders still break through – with voters and audience? The odd day-and-date format for a movie is just another example of how the pandemic has forced Hollywood to rethink movie releases. As discussed on WrapPRO, indie and specialty films can no longer rely on the platform’s traditional four-screen release in New York and Los Angeles to kick-start an award-winning movie, as traditional theaters in both cities have closed for almost a year are. You also can’t rely on the traditional buzz that stems from the Golden Globes ceremony and Oscar nomination announcements in January, as the pandemic has significantly delayed the awards season calendar. Films like “Nomadland,” “Judas and the Black Messiah,” and “The United States vs. Billie Holiday” will instead try to use their hybrid theatrical releases in February to generate interest, which will hopefully peak when the Oscar comes Awards ceremony takes place in April, with the films’ financial success being determined more by streaming subscriptions and PVOD sales than by revenue from a still limping box office. Also read: Why Nomadland left Chloe Zhao “emotionally drained” “Judas and the Black Messiah,” the Black Panther Party drama is one of three Warner Bros. films behind “Croods 2”. “The Little Things” came in second this weekend, earning $ 1.2 million on the fourth weekend for a total of $ 11.7 million. “Judas” is third with $ 905,000 on the second weekend for a 10-day sum of $ 3.35 million. “Wonder Woman 1984” ranks fourth with $ 805,000 and domestic sales of $ 42.7 million. All three films were released in theaters and on HBO Max day in and day out, although “WW84” is currently only available digitally on PVOD as Warner Bros. is temporarily removing its 2021 releases from HBO Max 30 days after it opened in theaters. While Comscore reports that only 38% of American theaters are currently open, the box office numbers are booming in China thanks to strong COVID-19 containment and a number of new titles hitting theaters, notably Detective Chinatown 3. The lukewarm reception from the Threequel audience caused the numbers to collapse for the second weekend after hitting a record $ 398 million on the opening weekend. By comparison, that’s roughly 10% of the $ 12.4 billion grossed in 2020 at the global box office crippled by the pandemic. While the US box office isn’t expected to recover until the second half of the year – and possibly not until the fall – China is at an early pace to make 2021 its best box office year yet.
