Bloomfield Hills-based nonprofit The Pink Fund plans to distribute $ 250,000 to qualified breast cancer patients in Michigan later this year.

Applications are now open to those who need assistance. Individuals eligible for assistance can receive up to $ 3,000 in non-medical expenses ranging from housing, transportation, utilities, and insurance within 90 days. Payments are made directly to the patient’s creditors.

Founded in 2006 by breast cancer survivor Molly MacDonald, The Pink Fund provides $ 60,000 to $ 85,000 monthly funding to breast cancer patients. By the end of June 2021, the organization will provide $ 5 million to those in need.

MacDonald was first diagnosed with breast cancer in April 2005. She had the first surgery on May 5th, and her home was sealed off in June. With no savings, alimony, or alimony after the divorce, MacDonald stood in line at a grocery bank for weeks to feed their five children.

“My personal experience with breast cancer made me realize how urgently such an organization was needed,” said MacDonald. “I have met so many incredible women over the years who have struggled financially during treatment. Not only are these women struggling to stay alive, they are also struggling to stay afloat. “
