Mom of man who died in custody needs solutions

The mother of a man who died in the custody of Rankin County sheriff’s deputies tells her side of what happened that night. “Why? Why? Why? Why? Why my child?” Monica Lee said in an interview with 16 WAPT News. Lee wants answers after her son, Damien Cameron, died late Monday. A news release from the Rankin County Sheriff’s Office said deputies got a call about a burglary and vandalism. When they arrived, Damien was identified as the suspect. The release said as a deputy approached him, he began to fight and resist arrest. They were able to eventually get him in custody and into a patrol vehicle. “I’m thinking they’re taking my son to jail, so I go outside to tell my son goodbye, that I loved him, and I’ll be up there tomorrow. At that point, when I got to the side of the truck, my son was laid on the ground, unresponsive,” Lee said. “From the bedroom to outside, ‘I can’t breathe. I can’t breathe. I’m tired.’ I asked the officer, ‘Can I give him some water? No!'”She said Damien was taken to Simpson General Hospital, then moved to the University of Mississippi Medical Center, where he died. Lee said to have the last image of her son be one of him in a hospital bed is unbelievable. “I don’t understand why it led to that point. It shouldn’t have happened. Now, my son is gone and he’s never coming home again,” Lee said. This grieving mother said she wasn’t the only one in tears over what was happening.”And to see this officer literally crying. He knows he messed up. He was crying,” Lee said.Lee said she just wants to know why.”It’s not right, it’s not right, it’s not right. In my heart something needs to be done. Justice needs to be brought because it’s not right,” Lee said.WAPT News had several questions for the sheriff’s department like, is there dash cam or body cam video of what happened that night? Also, we wanted to know more about the time Damien was moved from Simpson General Hospital to UMMC. They’re not releasing any more information outside of what was in their news release and they’ve turned their case over to the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation.Lee said she heard from the NAACP and is working with the civil rights organization to get more answers about her son’s death.
