Mom in custody after baby discovered deserted on North Shore roadside

A 39-year-old woman is being held in Cook County Jail on charges of neglect or child vulnerability after a 6-year-old was found on the side of Minnesota Highway 61 by Good Samaritans Thursday night.

Reps from the Cook County Sheriff’s Office responded to the Grand Portage area for a report on a roadside child.

When the MPs arrived, two men, Daniel Deschampe Sr. and Delwyn Wilson, helped keep the child warm. The child was found without adequate winter clothing, including without shoes or socks.

“The quick and decisive action of the two men resulted in a positive outcome for this child,” said Sheriff Pat Eliasen in a press release. “Thanks to Daniel and Delwyn and everyone who has come in to help this child in a time of great need.”

The MPs took the child in need and investigated the mother. The mother was taken into custody early Friday after allegedly abandoning the child.

She was arrested and is being held in Cook County Jail until the court appears. Cook County’s public health and social services support childcare and the case is still under investigation.
