JOSH CHAPIN: All right, Steve, let’s set up the scene for you here. We have asked the Durham Police Department, as well as other various Durham officials, for answers on who they are looking for. No updates on this police dog yet. What we can tell you We don’t know right now that a suspect is in custody, but this is Morehead Avenue, which is where much of the search has been focused. And you can focus on a cop here who has taken off some of his bulletproof belongings and vests and completed their search. A few minutes ago this afternoon, we can report from our helicopter that someone has been taken into custody. We are working very hard right now – our desk and me too – to confirm that this person is a suspect, but we saw someone being led out of the cemetery in handcuffs.

Now let’s get to what we know right now. When we drove to the scene it was difficult to get around. There were so many streets blocked by the Durham Police Department. The perimeter is still – and it appears the perimeter is now getting lighter – but it is still held around Maplewood Cemetery in and around Duke University Road while the search continued. The law enforcement staging area is the corner of Lakewood Mall on Chapel Hill Road.

If we look up from our helicopter upstairs, you’ll get a better idea of how many cops are out here. DPD said they were trying to arrest someone wanted for multiple thefts downtown. They tried to stop him, but he ran into a wooded area. At one point, the suspect took out a gun and fired back, hitting the police dog. The dog was taken to the hospital and is being treated for injuries.

BRIAN REITZ: This is an active police investigation. Please do not come into this area and be patient as we try to resolve this peacefully.

JOSH CHAPIN: Again the whole area crawled with police officers – still crawling -. We got staged with them at Lakewood Shopping Center, but we just got booted by the property management team, so we’re standing here on House Avenue down the street from Morehead Avenue. So what I can tell you again is all of these officers putting their gear – gear away – various Durham Police cruisers pulling out of this staging area. So we think this is good news. As soon as I get an update, I’ll tweet it and post it on abc11.com. Steven, Tisha, I’ll send it.
