A Los Angeles judge gave Lisa Marie Presley and her fourth husband joint custody of their 12-year-old twin daughters and ordered Elvis Presley’s only child to undergo random monthly drug tests for a year from the first such test on Thursday Show.
Los Angeles Supreme Court Justice Dianna Gould-Saltman also stated that the girls’ safety is not at risk when they are with her father, 59-year-old guitarist-producer Michael Lockwood. Presley reported in 2017 that the girls were taken into protective custody after discovering inappropriate photos of children on Lockwood’s computer.
“The court finds that the children are in no danger of harming their father,” the judge wrote in a lengthy judgment on December 8th.
However, Gould-Saltman also said that both 52-year-old Presley and Lockwood can be better parents by putting aside some of their hostility.
“The court finds that the conflict between the parties and their communication difficulties adversely affected the children’s well-being,” the judge wrote.
According to media reports on a pre-trial filing that was later sealed, Lockwood said he was so concerned that Presley was in substance abuse after the suicide of 27-year-old Benjamin Keough – her son from her first marriage to musician Danny Keough – on July 12 fall back – that he wanted custody of their daughters Harper Vivienne Ann and Finley Aaron Love.
The judge addressed Presley’s drug problems in her decision.
“(Presley) abused drugs to such an extent during the relevant times that her ability to accurately interpret and recall events was skewed and untrustworthy,” the judge wrote. “It is to her credit that she has since overcome her addiction and continues to take steps to ensure her sobriety.”
Gould-Saltman said she was “not concerned that (Presley) is currently using drugs.”
The judge wrote that Presley testified that after a cesarean section, when her twins were born in October 2008, she started using a pain reliever and later became addicted to ocycodone. She admitted taking up to 80 tablets a day.
“(Presley) started using cocaine to reduce her opiate use and help her think more clearly,” the judge wrote.
On his testimonial, Lockwood expressed concern that Presley was still not sober, in part due to photos of her seen in 2017 and 2018, later when Presley claimed to have gotten clean, the judge wrote .
“He testified that (Presley’s) drug problem started immediately after the twins were born and got significantly worse over time and got out of control by 2013,” said Gould-Saltman.
Lockwood said that many of the photos Presley deemed inappropriate were taken with her gift and that she herself was in some of them.
The hearing took place with several interruptions between August and November before the judge opened the case. The hearing was held in a closed session as the girls are minors. However, the judge’s decision was attached to a public document in which Lockwood asked Presley to pay legal fees.
Presley’s daughter Riley Keough testified in August that the family, including her mother, sought grief counseling three times a week to help deal with the death of her brother Benjamin, the judge said. Keough described her mother’s addition period as “short” and said “she was our rock” when describing how Presley raised her, the judge said.
Presley filed for divorce in June 2016, 10 years after she and Lockwood married. The divorce is ongoing.
