Lexington man charged for driving with little one on lap whereas fleeing police

A 22-year-old Lexington man was arrested Friday after allegedly holding a child on his lap while fleeing police.

According to information on the Davidson County Magistrate Office’s arrest warrant, Javon Sema Letterlough, 22, of Lexington, broke into a house on Dillon Street in Thomasville, took a child by his last name and fled.

The report said Letterlough held the child, whose age is currently unknown, on his lap while he was driving at high speed down West Holly Hill Road during the chase. When he stopped, Letterlough’s arrest warrant said he refused to leave the vehicle on police orders.

After being arrested, it was found that Letterlough had previously revoked his license; did not have liability insurance for the vehicle and was in possession of a small amount of marijuana.

The relationship between Letterlough and the child is currently unknown. There were no reports of injuries during the incident.

Letterlough has been charged with escaping / evading law enforcement in a motor vehicle, committing child abuse, defying an officer, breaking and kicking in, committing simple possession of a Schedule IV controlled substance (marijuana) to drive with a revoked driver’s license and drive without insurance.

He received a $ 50,000 secured bond and an initial trial on June 16.

This is the second arrest in the last six weeks of drivers having underage children in the car while fleeing from the police.

On April 10, 59-year-old Donald Ray Bailey of Lexington was arrested after allegedly ramming a police vehicle while a 6-year-old was in the front seat of the car.

According to law enforcement, Bailey fled the police when they tried to stop traffic on West Main Street in Thomasville.

During the chase, Bailey allegedly drove carelessly and recklessly before crashing “head-on” into a patrol car. Officers reported that there was a 6-year-old child in the front seat of Bailey’s vehicle who was not wearing a seat belt or otherwise restrained during the incident

No injuries were reported for either the child or the officer.
