Instances Sq. Capturing Suspect Farrakhan Muhammad Taken Into Custody Close to Jacksonville, Florida – CBS New York

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – The suspected shooter wanted in connection with the shooting in Times Square last week was taken into police custody on Wednesday.

The NYPD said US marshals found Farrakhan Muhammad in Florida.

Three people were injured in the shooting on Saturday, including a 4-year-old girl.

Marshals were able to locate Muhammad in a McDonald’s parking lot outside Jacksonville, where he was sitting in a car with his girlfriend and having lunch, CBS2’s Aundrea Cline-Thomas reported.

Officials said he did not oppose the arrest.

Marshals provided a picture to CBS2’s sister station in Jacksonville. Muhammad changed his appearance by cutting his hair.

Police had developed possible addresses the 31-year-old might be heading to, but they confirmed Muhammad was driving south after discovering the car he and his girlfriend were in at a Walmart in Fayetteville, North Carolina had been.

The EarthCam video shows crowds taking cover around 5 p.m. on Saturday at 44th Street and Seventh Avenue in Manhattan.

Police said Muhammad tried to shoot his brother in Times Square while fighting for a place on the sidewalk where they were illegally selling CDs.

With the help of surveillance videos and CrimeStoppers tips, the police were able to follow Muhammad to a nearby hotel, where he was discovered throwing clothes that were later salvaged.

Meanwhile, the bullets he allegedly fired hit a 43-year-old woman from Passaic, New Jersey, a 23-year-old woman from Rhode Island, and a 4-year-old girl, all of whom were innocent bystanders.

NYPD Commissioner Dermot Shea made the following promise to the child’s parents.

“At the time, I had the opportunity to speak to the father to tell him that we are sorry, that we would do everything in our power to get justice for his little girl. Today we fulfilled that promise, ”Shea said.

Muhammad is currently in Florida but will be charged here at some point.

Police said his girlfriend Kristine Vergara was also charged with helping the alleged shooter escape.

The investigation continues as the police have not yet found a weapon.
