Ice cream social advantages little one with most cancers

Ice cream welfare helped raise money for Nathan’s care and gave him the chance to be a child.

SCRANTON, Pennsylvania – It is a common sight these days to see tents set up in front of Jessee’s Place Ice Cream on Barring Avenue in Scranton.

Owner Tara Kojsza provides a monthly service for those in need.

“And today this is for Nathan the superhero, and he’s 8 years old, he just turned 8 last Friday, he has stage 3 kidney cancer. I work with his dad at UPS, so this one is a little closer to something real Nice to do, “said Kojsza.

Nathan Gray battled cancer for most of his life. Ice cream welfare helped raise money for his care and gave him the chance to be a child.

“It’s a great feeling, it’s constant, you see so much bad in the world, and then you see the community and how we all come together when someone is in need,” said Patricia Gray, Nathan’s mother.

Nathan’s mother says the financial and emotional support is priceless.

“And honestly, as a family that has been doing this for five and a half years, I don’t know where we would be without community support,” said Patricia.

Jessee’s Place donated a portion of the proceeds from the ice cream sale. There were also raffle baskets and vendors.

Kojsaz said they will be back next month to raise money for a Scranton child who has just been diagnosed with leukemia.

But this day was all about Nathan.

“Everyone just keeps praying for this child and his family. That’s just the most important thing,” said Kojsaz.
