Between Hurricane Sally and COVID-19, the Gulf Coast Kid’s House continues to provide a safe place for children and families who are victims of child abuse, helping more than 3,000 children in 2020.

To support this mission, the GCKH is one of four centers in northwest Florida that receive grants from the Gulf Power Foundation. The four – Gulf Coast Children’s Advocacy Center, Gulf Coast Kid’s House, Santa Rosa Kid’s House, and Emerald Coast Children’s Advocacy Center – are receiving $ 100,000 to support their efforts across northwest Florida.

The grant will help GCKH with immediate family needs such as counseling as well as child abuse prevention programs. GCKH teaches all K-12 students on child abuse and child trafficking prevention and has created a 40-minute online training course called Know Child Abuse (knowchildabuse.org) so that all adults in our community can learn to recognize to report and respond to child abuse.

FamiliesFirst seeks help with care services during National Foster Care Month

The Lakeview Center’s FamiliesFirst Network became the designated lead agency in Escambia, Santa Rosa, Okaloosa and Walton counties for foster families and related child care services 20 years ago in 2001. The team is working towards an important goal in 2021 and seeking help from the community.

Too many children are currently being placed in nursing homes or group nursing homes outside the region, as there are not enough homes in the four-district region. The distance makes family visits more difficult, removes children from friendships and other support, and can re-traumatize children.

Here are the latest statistics by county showing how many foster children live in homes outside their communities:

  • Escambia County, 58%
  • Walton County, 98%
  • Santa Rosa County, 70%
  • Okaloosa County, 65%

Children entering the child care system need love and security. They also need medical and therapeutic nursing homes. It is important to keep siblings together as well, and currently 96% of children in care have one or more siblings.
