Gainesville police are investigating a double murder, suspect in custody

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (WCJB) – Gainesville Police Department responded to an emergency call after gunfire had been fired and are currently investigating a double homicide in a northeastern Gainesville neighborhood.

The Gainesville Police Department has a male suspect in custody who they believe committed the crime shortly before 5 p.m. Officers found the male suspect who was still shooting at the house where the bodies were found.

“The person who caused this violence,” said information officer Graham Glover. “Those who shot these two people are in police custody so our neighbors can go to bed tonight and know that this person is being interviewed with GPD and is not on the street.”

Officers say the victims are a mother and her toddler. They were found with life threatening injuries on the property of a house on the 2900 block of NE 17th Drive. First responders attempted life-saving measures but were pronounced dead at the scene.

When the officers arrived, the suspect shot at the house and has since been taken into custody.
