Couple accused of utilizing baby help cash for medication

DANESE, WV (WVNS) – A Fayette County couple face charges of child neglect after allegedly using child support money on drugs and offering marijuana to a 13-year-old girl.

West Virginia State Police began the investigation on Wednesday, November 18, 2020 after the victim said they saw Melissa Redden and Kurt Redden use drugs on a daily basis. The soldiers were also advised that the girl was given marijuana and taught to smoke.

The victim also said Melissa would go up high several times until she fell asleep behind the wheel while driving. At one point, the victim said Melissa was stopped in Mercer County and arrested on a drug charge while she and Kurt were in the vehicle. During the incident, Kurt reportedly told her to hide the marijuana.

The soldiers later confirmed that Melissa was arrested on November 9 in Mercer County by employees of the WVSP Turnpike Division. She was charged with possession for the purpose of supplying heroin.

Both Kurt and Melissa were arrested for one child neglect at risk of injury. Kurt is also accused of contributing to a minor’s crime. The two were sent to the South Region Prison on December 18. Kurt’s bond is $ 25,000 while Melissa’s is $ 15,000.
