Bluffton lady dies in custody simply 4 days after DUI arrest

A Bluffton woman charged with DUI died in custody just days after she was arrested by police. Beaufort County authorities say Leah Dubs was wrecked with another vehicle near Red Cedar Street in Bluffton last Sunday afternoon. The officers arrested her on charges of drinking under the influence and endangering children. Doctors took her to the Beaufort Memorial because of an injury. The doctors treated her and released her back to the detention center. The next morning, Beaufort County officials said that a guard found her on the floor, semi-conscious. The guard asked if she needed help, which Dubs said she did. After a trip to the emergency room, the Beaufort County coroner says a medical helicopter flown her to a hospital in Charleston, where she died on August 5. The coroner believes she sustained a head injury in connection with the crash. An autopsy is scheduled for August 11th. Officials say the detention center is not investigating the death because Dubs was released from prison.
