NORWICH (WBNG) — Cancer is never a word you want to hear when it comes to your own health, nevertheless the health of your child. This was the unfortunate reality for one family in Norwich.  

Aaron Bates was just 9 years old when he was diagnosed with Dermatofibrosarcoma, a rare form of non-melanoma skin cancer. According to the Mayo Clinic, this cancer can begin as a bruise and work its way into being a bump on the skin. This is how Beverly Miller, Aaron’s mom found the tag. 

“Very shocking, very devastating didn’t even know what to think. Hit me hard that’s for sure.” 

After many doctor’s visits, tests, and two surgeries, the cyst-like piece of skin was removed. Miller says at points it was difficult for her.  

“Very exhausting, couldn’t really sleep at night or anything and he kept going and going and going.” 

The community of Norwich was able to help out. They sent donations and support to Aaron and his mother. Miller mentions that Aaron is doing much better now.

“We are very relieved and everything we’re just praying it don’t come back he can go to gym and stuff and play; he has to have it covered and lotion with some kind of type to cover it from the sun.” 

She says she doesn’t wish this experience on anyone else. Aaron, says he has a lot to be grateful for.  

“Thank you to the community and the generosity and the support and to all doctors who save or try to save our lives of cancer.” 

He also says he wants to thank his school for all of the love and support.  

The family will be hosting a bottle drive at 5012 NY-12, Norwich, NY 13815 on July 31st
