LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Jefferson County’s families owe more than $ 89 million in criminal child alimony. On Sunday, Jefferson County attorney Mike O’Connell printed the names of more than 3,000 criminal parents in the Courier Journal.

Parents owed at least $ 3,000 to make O’Connell’s list.

“The publication of the list that we want to discuss here is just one of the tactics we are using to collect on behalf of children,” O’Connell said Monday.

The list includes names, money owed, and last known addresses. O’Connell often says that tip callers may not know exactly where a person lives, but they do know where they work. The prosecution and child benefit department will take care of it from there.

“Louisville, we need your help finding these people who are failing to meet their obligations to their children,” said O’Connell. Many of the dollar amounts owed are in the five-digit range. The most egregious case has a male parent who owes more than $ 500,000.

“Most of our cases will be based in Jefferson County, either as custody or non-custody, where we are also enforcing an order, possibly from another state,” said Diane Fleming, director of child support, Monday.

Prosecutors raised more than $ 6 million for child support in 2020. There are currently 54,894 open cases available for 15 lawyers and 140 employees for child benefit.
