HIGHLAND – Two Chicagoers were detained in a car dealership parking lot late Sunday after leading police in a Schererville car chase in a stolen Audi, an official said.

The driver, a 19-year-old male, and passenger, a 19-year-old female, are charged with experiencing an attempted traffic stop after a Schererville official saw them drive erratically through a parking lot around 9:15 p.m. on 1040 block of US 41, said deputy chief Jeff Cook.

Several people, including children, were walking nearby at the time, Cook said.

After exiting the parking lot, the driver stopped at a red light on Willowbrook Drive near US 41, where the officer checked the Audi’s license plate. The officer found the car was reported stolen from Chicago on December 12th.

Chicago police records showed the vehicle was stolen, Cook said.

The driver then drove on through a green light. At that point the officer tried to stop him. He couldn’t stop and instead raced north on US 41, Cook said.

Additional officers responded and chased the driver to the Duke of Oil at 9615 Indianapolis Blvd. in the highlands. There the driver lost control of the vehicle and stopped in the store’s parking lot.

He and the passenger immediately got off and tried to run, police said. The officers quickly arrested the passenger and took the driver into custody shortly afterwards, Cook said.
